Memory Stirred A photography project by Antonio Ysursa

For 10 years I photographed my younger sisters and cousins growing up, as I once did, in Idahoโ€™s dust-filled air. Through them I am exploring the mendacity of memory and its relation to youth.

My memories have blended with my familyโ€™s reality, as I have watched them grow up in the same dark fieldsโ€”their bodies changing against a deceptively latent landscape. Their interactions with the land, fantasies and illusions, and the silence as their identities unfold are all distant and familiar to me.

Some of my photographs are taken spontaneously, others are moments altered. But between the fact and fiction lies a narrative of our parallel lives. Through these images I am navigating my way through youth in its changes and transformationsโ€”from the dreamy and naive moments, to the tensions and vulnerabilities of time passing, the body evolving, and the uncertainties loss.
